Parenting magazines are getting a dash of spice courtesy of former journalist and mother-of-two, Anjum Choudhry Nayyar. The founder of masalamommas.com online magazine is on a mission to foster meaningful discussions among moms in the South Asian communities.

“I wanted to create a space for moms to have these conversations online and write about their challenges and their triumphs when it comes to balancing culture and motherhood in a meaningful way,” says Nayyar. After having her first child, Nayyar says that she personally struggled to strike this balance. How could she make sure that her children got a dose of both their South Asian heritage and their Canadian culture? In her search for answers, Nayyar turned to social media.
“When I first launched, I launched on Twitter because it became my space to have those conversations about our cultural traditions and how to make it work in our daily lives as a family…I would tweet a question about a challenge I was having and get answers back from moms just like me but in different communities across the planet!” she says. Inspired by these online discussions, the award-winning journalist started writing and publishing articles that answered the quandaries she, and other moms, were facing.
